A new spin

Last Saturday morning my friend Albina got me out of bed with the message ‘Want to come to my friend’s exhibit in the city? It’s a fantastic collection of handmade spinning tops!”

She explained that her friend, Tokyo-based artist Shirley Cho, asked family and friends around the world to draw their dream spinning top and send it to her on a postcard. Shirley then turned the designs into working prototypes, carving them out of wood, and painting and decorating them. Her beautiful spinning tops and the postcards that inspired them are on display at Gaffa gallery on 281 Clarence St, Sydney, until Feb 22. The gallery is just a few steps from the QVB and the exhibition is free, more info here.

I told her I liked this green one and she told me the child who designed it described the blue spikes as demon fangs.

This one is a red onion spinning top !

Albina’s adorable owl design made into reality!

Bean and I went a bit pic crazy because the tops are so pretty.

In the play area you can spin to your heart’s content – Shirley will show you how it’s done.

Thanks to Albina Lee for the above image of Shirley.
